In 2004 City of Melbourne established a new Sister City relationship with Milan, Italy. To mark the occasion and to acknowledge the contributions of the Italian community to the life of the city, City of Melbourne has developed a piazza in Carlton’s Argyle Square. Incorporating a commissioned public art work by Melbourne's Italian Porphyry artists, traditional paving in porphyry cobblestones, features a central solar clock in bronze, stainless steel and white Verdello stone. Designed by Andrea Tomaselli, the solar clock continues Melbourne's culture of public timekeeping.

5 URBANART posters by ITALIAN PORPHYRY artists DIANNE BEEVERS and ANDREA TOMASELLI interpret the 4 elements AER, AQUA, TERRA and IGNIS represented in bronze in SOLARIS, the Solar Clock. Together the poster images represent the complex collaborative process of the art work’s creation from airy CONCEPT, to fluid DESIGN, material FABRICATION, and energetic INSTALLATION of the finished public art work.
