EDUCATION AND TRAINING UNIT

Providing cross-cultural training and information to service providers and community organisations

The Education and Training Unit aims to:

• provide information and training to the general community agencies and government organisations on the ethnic diversity in the West which will lead to improvement in the quality of life of people from migrant communities.
• increase the awareness and sensitivity of mainstream service providers to the needs of their migrant clients.
• assist service staff to develop skills in effectively communicating with people of non-English speaking background.
• assist organisations to develop training programs to suit their needs.
• assist organisations to maximize the benefits of our community diversity in the working environment, leisure activities, business, arts, etc.

The Education and Training Unit offers:

• Access to a large number of community development specialists who work with migrant communities in the West, as well as representatives of a large number of community groups.
• A consultancy to mainstream agencies on access and equity for non-English speaking migrants.
• Training courses in Multicultural Diversity for mainstream service providers.
• General information sessions for service providers in the Western Region.
• Demographic data on:
• non-English speaking residents and their geographic location in the West -annual migrant intake and their indicated residential destination.
• profiles on specific migrant communities.
• access to mailing lists of migrant organisations and bilingual workers in the West and other areas.
• referrals to the main sources of information on migrant issues.
