Fecund Beach Marsupiums

An installation by Kim Power
Yarra Sculpture Gallery, Gallery 1
April 18 - May 13 2001
Fecund Beach Marsupiums is a work made in response to witnessing a mob of Kangaroos along the Two Bay Walking Track near Bushrangers Bay, Victoria. The unique morphology of the Australian Kangaroo inspired me to make a work about life carrying life. The protective space of the marsupial pouch is the prime motivator for the formal articulation of the work.

To date my work has explored issues central to bio-diversity and highlights the co-existence and crossing over of the processes and spaces of the natural world and constructed urban space. The installation at Yarra Sculpture Gallery continues to explore this theme.
The surfaces and forms of the work are deliberately ambiguous, referring to shapes, colours and structures of urban architecture and colours, shapes and forms found in nature. Line and form create pictorial references to land, sea and cityscape.
The interconnection and cycle of life is again explored through the close placement of the forms and the coloured electrical cable that weaves through the piece connecting it within the space of the gallery.
