INTRODUCTION
Underwater navigation is useful to avoid those long surface swims at the end of a dive, reduce the need to surface for orientation (which can increase the risk of bends through making multiple ascents). It makes you feel less confused and anxious by making you feel in control of your dive plan and not "lost in space"! Ah yes, there are many benefits to using underwater navigation, grasshopper...
"But how can I use these ancient methods to achieve navigation nirvana?" I hear you ask and for that matter "what are these methods practised by the ancient wise ones?"
Well natural underwater features can assist. As well, estimating speed, time and distance can help give you a mental map of your travels. Of course, for those who are into using mechanical devices, there is always the compass.
These methods will be looked at in the next pages individually, but remember that true nirvana may utilise all methods concurrently...
