Who are we you ask? Well,
Hashing was started in Malaysia in 1938 by a bunch of British Expats. Bored
with the local scene they began meeting on a Monday night and ended up running
around the jungle, having some local tucker (hence the word Hash) and drinking
copious amounts of alcohol. Since then it has mushroomed into a world wide fraternity
of socialising (mainly) runners who meet up once a week to run trail. There
are a few clubs in almost every major town in the world and at least one in
most small towns or nearby.
What Happens at
a Hash Run?
We all meet up at the venue for the
evening (park, pub, a house, etc.) and then run the trail which
has been preset by the Hare. Trail consists of chalk marks
or blobs of flour that mark a route ending up where we started.
During the run there are symbols drawn for a Hash Halt, On
Back or a Check which are designed to keep everyone
together and happy. Back at the start it's time for socialising,
general frivolity and a meal. Then the highlight of the evening
- The Circle! Led by the appropriately inept individual,
various Hashers are charged with a variety of offences
that were committed on trail, the previous week or at some other
time (some of very dubious origin). After being charged, the poor
unsuspecting individual is presented with a glass of beer (or
wine or whatever - always alcoholic) that they scull down with
gusto!
