Council on the Ageing (Australia) (COTA- A) is an independent organisation run by older people. It exists to protect the promote the well-being of all older people and works as an advocate for older Australians by providing information, policy analysis, publications , referral and advisory services, consultation and representation. Individuals, consumer organisations, service provider organisations, professional and industry associations, corporate organisations and local governments authorities can join the COTA umbrella through State and Territory membership. COTA (Australia) is a federation of State and Territory councils and national consumer and service provider organisations.. The national office is in Melbourne. Membership throughout Australia consists of over 1,500 organisations and 50,000 individuals.

COTA (Australia) liaises with the Commonwealth Government and with other organisations providing services and working with older people in Australia, and internationally through its membership of the International Federation on Ageing and HelpAge International.
