The Australian Society for Geriatric Medicine comprises medical practioners engaged in the practice of geriatric medicine or related disciplines aiming to maintain and improve standards of medical care for the aged, promote better healthcare programs for the aged and to promote research into medical problems and related problems of the aged.

Plans for 1999 include holding the annual scientific meeting in Perth in May. This meeting will include the principles of IYOP.
