Images Of Our Elders exhibition was established in 1994 as a community education initiative by the Hammond Care Group. The Hammond Care Group is a registered charity which specialises in aged care services and also has a commitment to the broader issues of successful and positive ageing.

The Images Of Our Elders exhibition has become one of the most popular Seniors Week events with over 17,000 people having attended the exhibitions since 1994. It is also a main event in NSW and Commonwealth Government celebrations for 1999, the International Year of Older Persons.

Each year 20 remarkable Australians are selected from the Australian community to be featured in the exhibition.

It took four months to create the 1999 Images Of Our Elders Exhibition, flying around the country to shoot photographs and interview participants.

The 20 remarkable Australians profiled are from diverse social and cultural backgrounds.

The 1999 Images Of Our Elders Exhibition photographer is Phil Carrick, a photographer with The Australian Financial Review.

Images Of Our Elders exhibition incorporates an annual $5000 photographic competition for amateur and professional photographers. Winning portfolios of Images Of Our Elders Photographic Competition are displayed at the Exhibition.

Images Of Our Elders is a not-for-profit project and sponsors include The Australian Financial Review, Photo Technica, Allen Jack + Cottier and the Ageing and Disability Department.

A stunning full-colour coffee-table book commemorating the exhibition, with personal commentaries by the 20 prominent Australian elders profiled, is produced each year.

Some prominent Australians who have supported Images Of Our Elders Exhibition include: Peter Collins, John Doyle, Slim Dusty, Morris West, Arthur Boyd, Bryce Courteney, Senator Cheryl Kernot, Hazel Hawke, Ita Butrose, the late Colleen Clifford, the late Sir Hubert Opperman, Poppy King, Roger Climpson, Tom Uren, the late Burnum Burnum, Gwen Plumb, Don Burrows and, Smokey and Dot Dawson, Dame Leonie Kramer, Lois O'Donoghue, Betty Churcher, Dame Roma Mitchell,Frank Hyde, Charmaine Solomon, Swami Sarasvati and Al Grassby.
