AC '99 Update - Edition No. 4 (October 1998)
Longitudunal Study on Women's Health
Women's Health Australia is a national initiative. The project is being undertaken by the Research Institute for Gender and Health, University of Newcastle in collaboration with the University of Queensland. Other researchers from numerous disciplines, departments
and faculties from universities across Australia are
also involved.
The aim of the study is to identify factors associated with healthy aging. The cohort comprises 12,624 older women aged 70-74 years who are mostly healthy.
The following key issues will be explored as longitudinal study accumulates: successful ageing; major life events; health service use; caring and being cared for; differential experiences of ageing for women in urban, rural and remote environments. Other issues to be explored include: prevention and risks of under-nutrition; sleep disturbance and hypnotic use; and maintenance and health implications of social support.
The first stage of the research has been completed.
The second phase of research will be conducted
in March 1999. AC=B999 National will keep the NGO network informed of developments.
