A ROUGH TIMELINE FOR AGEING

Many people live very healthy lives and do NOT suffer from the conditions outlined. There are also no set ages for the onset of disease or death.

AGE OF PERSON APPROXIMATE STAGE OF LIFE ~ CONDITION
0 - 24
  • Schooling
  • Formal Education
  • Puberty
25 - 35
  • deleterious aspects of ageing begin
  • decline in perceptual speed
35 - 45
  • Start to experience higher blood pressure
  • First signs of cardiovascular problems in those who are at risk
  • Reading distance increases
45 - 55
  • Most people experience some greying of hair
  • Menopause, followed by accelarated bone loss
  • Skin wrinkling and pigmentation from UV exposure
  • Numeric ability declines
55 - 65
  • Likely to become a caregiver (for family member)
  • 50% of people suffer chronic pain
  • 50% of women and 10& of men will suffer an osteoporosis related fracture; others undergo reduction in height
  • Wisdom fully recognised
  • Minor naming problems
65 - 75
  • Retired
  • Consequences of cardiovascular health problems becoming more apparent
  • Most people whi have ever smoked have given up by this stage
  • Abdominal obesity
  • Verbal ability declines
75 - 85
  • Mobility becoming a problem
  • More than half of these people are taking 3 or more medications a day
  • Continence problems
  • Increased risk of pressure sores
  • 20% of people suffer from some form of dementia and memory problems
  • Cancer rates rise
85+
  • One in three people will be blind or suffer from severe vision impairment
  • Temperature control reduced
  • Death (we cannot and will not put a definite age on this end!)
